Statement Calling on the Government of Canada to Join the International Community and Recognize the State of Palestine with East Jerusalem as its Capital – Feb 26th, 2018

Feb 26/2018 Toronto – Canada and Canadians in majority support Israel’s right to exist and live in peace with its neighbours within secure boundaries. However, it is important to make clear that the Government of Canada also officially recognizes the Palestinian right to self-determination and supports the creation of a sovereign, independent, viable, democratic and territorially contiguous Palestinian state, as part of a comprehensive, just and lasting peace settlement. [1]
The official position of the Government of Canada is that it recognizes the Palestinian Authority (PA) as the governmental entity in the West Bank and Gaza. Canada also recognizes the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) as the principal representative of the Palestinian people. Canada continues to support Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and is working with the government led by Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah. [2]
The Government of Canada is committed to the goal of a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in the Middle East, including the creation of a Palestinian state living side by side in peace and security with Israel. [3]
The Government of Canada does not recognize Israel’s unilateral annexation of East Jerusalem. [4]
In compliment to the statement released today by the Conservative Party of Canada which promises to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, I call on the Government of Canada to make good of its official position and now officially recognize the State of Palestine with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Recognizing Jerusalem as the joint capital of the State of Israel and the State of Palestine is the final necessary step the Government of Canada must take for the honor of Jerusalem, and the achievement of peace.
Canada’s partners in the European Union and the Arab League of States insisted today in Brussels that Jerusalem must be the joint capital of Israel and the State of Palestine. EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said today that the “special status and character of the city must be preserved.”
The time for Canada to join the vast majority of the international community and officially recognize the State of Palestine is now.
The Vatican officially recognized the State of Palestine in 2015. Over 70.5% of the UN membership recognizes the State of Palestine.
As of December 21st, 2017, 176 nations among the 193 UN members called for Palestinian statehood.
Recognition of the State of Palestine does not mean a denial of the State of Israel with Jerusalem as its capital, rather it simply recognizes the reality that Jerusalem will never be the exclusive capital of the State of Israel, rather it will always remain a shared holy capital of the Arabs and Israelis, Muslims, Christians and Jews, of the State of Palestine and the State of Israel.
The issue of East Jerusalem [Al-Quds] and the Arab-Islamic identity of the city and the preservation of its holy sites for both Muslims and Christians is a non-compromising and highly inflammatory issue around the world, especially the Haram al-Sharif (the Noble Sanctuary) Al Aqsa Mosque and its Compound including the Dome of the Rock.
The time to act is now. Peace will be achieved. Canada must act. The Government of Canada must act now and officially recognize the State of Palestine so future generations of Israelis and Palestinians can finally live in peace, and the holy city of Jerusalem can finally be restored as a peaceful pilgrimage site for the Children of Abraham.
There is no alternative to recognizing the State of Palestine along side the State of Israel for Canada. The time to act is now.
Canada must join its partners around the world now for the sake of global security and peace.
